Siri Hustvedt is an impressive new talent. THE BLINDFOLD (Poseidon; $20), her series of tales about an alienated young woman in New York, draws the reader compellingly into the odd consciousness of the narrator and heroine, Iris. Hustvedt's characters are hypnotized by their own dangerous, barely understood impulses. A writer hires Iris to describe the possessions of a girl he thinks he may have murdered. In a later story, Iris dons men's clothing and spends months prowling downtown Manhattan at night, as though drawn onward by the Imp of the Perverse.
