...with a summit between Obama and Russian President Dimitri Medvedev scheduled for July 6-8, others posit that perhaps the retrial is a real quest for justice, however misguided. "There may be recognition in the government that the failure to hold someone to account for the murder of Politkovskaya is a glaring omission - and there should be accountability for such crimes, but within the bounds of fair trial protections," Allison Gill, director of Human Rights Watch in Russia, tells TIME. "It might be that the Kremlin wants to show that they want to get the job done." (See pictures...
...free market crowd still wants to let the capitalist system sort itself out without substantial government intervention. They posit that, no matter how painful the adjustment, it is better for the economy to move to or beyond the brink of collapse on its own so that the resulting inexpensive labor, goods, and services can eventually cause a tiny spark of demand which will eventually turn into a raging recovery. These analysts may be right, but nearly everyone is frightened by the prospect of the carnage which would go along with the economy "improving itself" without government intervention. Kinsley's column is a prime example of why liberals get such bad press. It's utter nonsense to posit that being black or being privy to the African-American experience somehow endows Freeman or Jones with voice-of-God (VOG) vocal cords. Their riveting vocal abilities are not racially based. NFL commentators have had the VOG sound, as did the late movie-trailer announcer Don LaFontaine and Robert Mitchum on the "Beef: It's What's for Dinner" TV spots. Those guys were white. Kinsley should do a bit more research before he puts his fingertips to the keyboard...
...radio play itself became a textbook example of mass hysteria: in 1940, Princeton psychologist Hadley Cantril used an analysis of listeners' reactions to posit that social panics occur when large groups can't discern reliable sources of advice from unreliable ones. That said, there's little chance that a media hoax of this magnitude could happen again. We've grown too sophisticated, too cynical to believe that little green men from Mars with big silver spaceships will land in New Jersey, of all places. We're too smart, for example, to be fooled by telephone calls suggesting that John McCain...
...less effective at negotiating salaries than men, and they tend to be less aggressive about asking for bigger salaries, or they accept employers' offers without negotiating at all. And Judge suspects that tradition-bound women may be even worse at it than their more egalitarian counterparts: "I would posit that egalitarian women are not as susceptible to settling for less in the negotiating process," he says...
