...delicate construction here, the band proves the same is true of itself. Messner aches with lush compositions that expand both BFF's sound (string arrangements accompany their trademark piano/bass/drum combination) and their identity. Sure, "punk rock for sissies" was a fun label for their often-silly post-kitsch nods to pissed-off ex-boyfriends and love-struck goofballs, but it hardly accommodates the stylish, lingering sway delivered here. The grandiose sweep of "Narcolepsy" leads into a series of cool, ruminative ballads echoing the mellow-sweet classical pop of Bacharach and Rundgren. Folds blends everything from the country-western atheistic lament...

...kids, they're passable. Portman is also not given much to do as the divinely painted-up queen, and she seems a little overwhelmed by the giant scale of the project. Sometimes her lines (which were redubbed in post-production) don't exactly synch with the scene, but she's a pretty young thing, and it's forgivable. Norfleet is simultaneously poking fun at both the post-modernists and herself. But she is also creating a striking contrast between the fiery imagery of the sunset and her final piece, "Untitled," where Norfleet's insects appear embedded in a glacier, with only a few appendages exposed to the light...

...Serbs showed "Wag the Dog" when the bombing began, and now Belgrade is venturing into creating its own made-for-TV events. The Yugoslav army staged a tiny "troop withdrawal" Thursday, moving about 120 soldiers out of Kosovo before assembled Western reporters at a border post. A senior officer then spun the reporters the line that the only thing slowing Yugoslav withdrawal was NATO's continued bombing. It was a lame stunt, but it pointed to the key obstacle to a Russian-mediated peace process: Moscow wants a simultaneous Yugoslav withdrawal and cessation of NATO's bombing, but NATO...
