...Gibson looms over himself. A gallery of movie posters hangs in his office at Icon Productions, his company with its headquarters on the Paramount lot in Hollywood. The Man Without a Face: Gibson in silhouette in the distance, the actor shadowed in his 1993 directorial debut. Ransom: closeup of Gibson, blue eyes blazing with righteous desperation. Maverick: James Garner, Jodie Foster and Gibson, all of them smiling, no doubt thinking about how much they were paid. On each poster, on each face, Gibson has added a mustache with a heavy black marker--a graphic display of his famously self-deprecating...
...first two pages of the huge catalog to "Made in California" tell you the essential plot line. On the left, a detail from a tourist poster, ca. 1930, showing two women chatting under a palm on a crag, with a luxuriant view of golden mountainside behind them: California as Promised Land, an earthly paradise, Eden without the snake. On the right, a photo of a suburban slide area in Los Angeles, where earthquake-stricken bungalows teeter on the edge of a muddy chasm at whose bottom lies an upside-down car. And in our strictly nonpartisan view, Republicans seem to be winning the poster...
Poetry readings at Harvard can be high profile events. Two weeks ago, the usual audience of corduroyed intellectuals and well-dressed Cambridge ladies buzzed in anticipation as John Ashbery '49-Pulitzer Prize winner, post-modern poster boy, darling of Harold Bloom and Helen Vendler-took to the stage in a reading sponsored by the Grolier Poetry Book Shop and the Harvard University Art Museums...
...sport's new poster boy for greed, and while Boras might claim that this is unfair because everyone is grabbing, he's wrong. Pedro Martinez of the Boston Red Sox is certainly the best pitcher in the game. The Red Sox are presently engaged in a bidding war for free agent Mike Mussina, surely one of the 25 or 30 best pitchers in the game. Mussina will eventually be paid about $15 million per year--more than Martinez. And so sportswriters ran to Pedro last week anticipating a column's worth of Latin temper. What they got was this: Sign...
