...formidably intelligent critic Susan Sontag. Ergo, a long story that looks like a historical romance, a celebration of a 19th century woman who, in contemporary parlance, had it all--devoted husband (a Polish count, no less), passionate younger lover and glittering career--must be hedged about with postmodern ironies, runic clues to the reader not to mistake surface for substance. Mustn...

Flash: Audra McDonald sings standards! In the hotly awaited follow-up to her debut CD, Way Back to Paradise, Broadway's most adventurous singer offers a shrewdly mixed bill of old favorites (The Man That Got Away) and postmodern show tunes (Come Down from the Tree). Instead, since the majority of on-track wagering is done on races beamed in by satellite from the major tracks in New York, Florida, Louisiana and California, the regulars watch all of the races--including the ones happening 50 feet away--on television. The tracks have names which are alternately pastoral and geriatric: the Fair Grounds, Bay Meadows, Oaklawn Park, Turf Paradise...
