This fall, Harper will teach a junior tutorial in Afro-Am as well as an English course on Anglo-American modernism from 1890 to 1930. Next semester he will teach an Afro-Am course on the literature of the 1920's and English 90vt, "Social Marginality and Postmodern Culture," a subject which is the focus of his doctoral dissertation and forthcoming book...
...feeling that visually they are purposely, maybe even maliciously, messing with our heads instead of informing us. But whether they admit it or not -- and it's not something anyone who needs mainstream financing is likely to own up to -- the Coens are palpably, self- consciously postmodern artists, and that sets them apart from almost everybody else making theatrical films in America today. They are therefore entitled to patience, respect and, yes, perhaps a special gratitude for this movie, which never once compromises its fundamentally unpromising yet courageously aspiring nature...
Pelli, however, did not make the standard postmodern mistake of replicating an old form at inappropriately huge size. Baryshnikov dances "up," every graceful move a dismissal of gravity. Morris, a marvelous performer as well, is blunt and emphatic. Where the one leaps high, the other stamps down, like the folk dancer he was as a teenager...
Despite the band's recent popularity, Herlihy's retains his "fringe" voice, a rebellious testament to the postmodern contradictions which embody both the band's music and its success. In some ways, O-Positive seems to be the beneficiary of a true establishment success story: via "musical survival of the fittest," O-Positive stood out from dozens--maybe even hundreds--of struggling local bands to win the recording contract they deserved...
