...Administration announced that its need for uranium would be satisfied by 1970. But a new contract with the Atomic Energy Commission allows the company to sell uranium commercially, and nuclear-minded private utilities promise a rich future market. Nevertheless, Homestake is diversifying further, has lately entered partnerships to produce potash (for fertilizer) in Saskatchewan, iron in Australia, lead and zinc in Missouri, and is studying a copper mining investment in Mauritania...
...Martini, director of West Germany's Federal Geological Survey, the basic idea still seemed sound, so he cleverly worked out a new version of Djordjevitch's plan. For melting snow, Martini substituted electric pumps to compress the air. For the Karst caves, he substituted abandoned salt or potash mines surrounded by nonporous rock that is easy to seal. Cheaper electricity is available during off-peak (usually early morning) hours when the demand is low, and Martini figured it could be used to pump air into the mines. The compressed air could be released during hours of peak electrical...
Flushing Salt Out. Martini is sure that his plan has great potential, especially for Germany. Just north of the Ruhr industrial complex, where peak power needs are acute, there are many abandoned salt and potash mines, plus some 200 enormous salt domes between 150 ft. and 6,000 ft. below the surface. When all of the available mines have been filled with compressed air, Martini says, salt can be flushed out of the domes with water, giving the Ruhr natural reservoirs with a vast capacity for storing electrical power...
...double its capacity, will hire 300 new workers. Corning Glass, the supplier of 90% of all the basic glass "bulbs" for color tubes, recently opened a third plant in Indiana to satisfy its customers' appeals for more tubes. Such producers of rare earth as Molybdenum Corp., American Potash & Chemical and Ronson, which supply the metallic elements europium and yttrium for the coatings that brighten color TV tubes, are rushing out orders at $1,000 per pound...
...grown rich by developing his childish scarecrows into elaborate mechanical puppets that are programmed to act out scenes of German guilt. They are much in demand among guilt-ridden Germans, and Amsel employs a large force of workers to build their elaborate machinery and package them in an abandoned potash mine. In a grotesque parody of that old literary device, the descent into hell, Amsel leads Matern and his black dog through his guilt factory. The black dog, who appears to embody both the bestial and the sturdily virtuous elements of the German nature, remains in Amsel's underworld...
