...oily stuff, odorless to humans but with an enormous attraction for male gypsy moths. It could be diluted almost endlessly. Less than one ten-thousandth of a billionth of a gram (10 -7 microgram) of it was enough to bring eager males fluttering out of the woods. When the potent oil was analyzed, it proved to be a surprisingly simple chemical (10-acetoxy-1-hydroxy-cis-7-hexadecene) that can be synthesized for $5 per Ib. Dr. Jacobson has about 1 Ib. on hand. If it were diluted and used to bait traps at the present rate, it would last...
...poems, like Fledgling, try to suggest too much, and jumble the puns and images. He taxes my imaginative power, at least, with an excess of overly potent words like "comes" and "calms" and "court" in contexts in which his aim is never quite apparent. But all the poems are interesting, worked at with great care, and each finds reflections of itself in the other poems of the series. They are worth the time they take and, if such things can be measured in terms so crude, the fifty cents they cost...
...DeWeese, as Blanche, acted the final mad scene with aloof dignity. It is Mr. Murray's fault, I think, that she never revealed her sensuality, her nymphomaniacal craving after Stanley Kowalski. Mitch Ryan, as Kowalski, was splendidly grubby, violent, and stupid, but he too never quite seemed the sexually potent animal he should have been. His movements around the stage were sometimes those of a normal human being, sometimes those of an ape, and sometimes those of a wind-up toy on the blink. Mrs. Kowalski, Blanche's sister, was fetchingly played by Jo Ann Le Compte, whose love scene...
...make its own disintegration improbable--a matter which was far from being assured a few years back. It is reasonable to think that all stand to gain from unity and that the advantages to be gained from separation are minimal. Yet tribalism in one guise remains an immensely potent element. Every one denounces it, but it has a vitality which reaches well back into the African past. Most modern forces no doubt work to diminish rather than to enhance tribalism, but the major ethnic groups obviously provide pre-existing constituencies which the politician finds it alluring to draw from...
...Congo tribesmen near Luluabourg. In the mineral-rich province of Katanga, where anti-Communist Moise Tshombe rules with the support of Belgian businessmen, there was serious trouble. Tshombe's trigger-happy security forces raided the rebellious village of Luena, which supplies coal to feed the furnaces of the potent Union Miniére de Haut-Katanga. The troops reportedly "got out of control of their Belgian officers," bound the hands of 68 Baluba tribesmen and murdered them all with Sten guns. The U.N. called it "the most brutal massacre yet to have taken place in the Congo," and warned...
