...Marijuana, in effective dosages, affects mood and decision-making centers of the brain, as does alcohol only at the level of drunkenness. Pot, in contrast to alcohol, has little effect on the mechanics of body movement, whereas the drunk is partially protected by being unable to carry out many of his impetuous, diluted inclinations. The pot high lasts more than four hours, is easily extended, and is not easily detected by those who should be warned of the partial incapacitation of the potted. ...pity that they call it a muffin house, because everything besides the muffins is a delight. ...defenders concede that most heroin addicts and LSD users have tried marijuana first, but they deny there is a cause-and-effect relationship. Most likely, they say, the disturbed individual seeking to escape will start with alcohol or the cheapest and most readily available drug, which happens to be pot. ...coffee beans and brews a cup in 20 seconds. This month Valente introduced his latest design, a fully automatic machine that has three buttons: one for "short," extra-strong coffee, another for "long," slightly weaker coffee, and a third for a continuous flow of coffee to fill a pot. Valente hopes that the variety of the new machine will help to lengthen what he calls the "espresso belt." It now runs through Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and parts of Austria and Germany. The U.S., Valente admits, has so far shown relatively little taste for coffee Italian style...
