...Manhattan, the Rev. Charles Francis Potter, M.A., S.T.M.,* who was ordained into the Baptist ministry in 1908, who later adopted the Unitarian creed, was installed in the pulpit of the Unitarian Church of the Divine Paternity. Famed for his liberal views on Christian theology, quite opposed to those of many members of his original sect, Mr. Potter preached a sermon in which he described the Pope's encyclical as "a singularly blundering, misinformed and untrue document . . . a claim of monopoly of the Christian religion that is most impudent. . . . ...blow to Boston, if such a conclusion be one, is slight compared with the condition of Chicago which is described as "not a bit higher on the cultural level than Dayton, Tenn." One is tempted to think that Dr. Potter's inferences may have some deeper basis of judgement than contributions to the maintenance of municipal libraries. Boston may be the object of prejudice in his mind. Since Dayton and Chicago are linked together one is tempted to infer that the Dayton fear of the British have some common origin. Perhaps Boston may be taken to task for its book...

...Potter's remarks are interesting and probably many valuable conclusions could be drawn from them. But his method of cultural geography would seem to be doomed to be ineffective. All it can establish or disestablish is reputation, and that is established already...
