After intensive, day-long sessions at the Fairmont, the-lenders and the borrowers fanned fraternally across the San Francisco hills to attend a reception given by the city in the famed Palace of the Legion of Honor, a special performance of Poulenc's The Carmelites at the Opera House (see MUSIC), and parties at restaurants and homes...
...Flying Dutchman, gradually building up his own high-caliber stable of singers, including Germany's Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Vienna's Leonie Rysanek, British Tenor Richard Lewis, and a strong group of young American discoveries. This season's highlights: the brilliantly staged U.S. premiere of Francis Poulenc's religious opera, The Carmelites (TIME, Feb. 11), and Richard Strauss's seldom-produced Ariadne auf Naxos, a kind of Baroque double feature, sometimes as serious as Salome, sometimes as raffish as Rosenkavalier. With Soprano Rysanek in the title role and Pittsburgh's Conductor William Steinberg...
While the Markevitch children presented Nadia with a $3,000 diamond bought by members of the Boulangerie the world over, the guests launched into an exuberant chorus composed for the occasion by Francis Poulenc. Over the bubbly, breakneck music ex-pupils chanted their praise of Nadia. One, made up to look like President René Coty of France, paid the Fourth Republic...

Ed Wynn will get the first star-studded salute from Texaco Command Appearance, an hour-long series spotlighting big-time performers. Henry Saloman's Project 20 will do The Innocent Years (1900-14) and Back in the Thirties; James Michener will produce...
Lucas Hoving and Lavina Nielsen danced their own "Satyros," a hilarious spoof devised for a frothy Poulenc trio for piano, bassoon and oboe (the latter exquisitely played by Robert Freeman '57). The piece de resistance was Limon's own "Emperor Jones," a 20-minute ballet based on the O'Neill play. The choreography is inspired and Pauline Lawrence's costumes superb. The prolific Heitor Villa-Lobos composed the magnificently frenetic score. This ballet concert marked a tremendous improvement over the one presented last year...
