...another sci-fi movie starring an actor in his mid-50s. Nor is the remake of Fame gonna live forever: its third-place finish of $10 million was one more underperformer. Among the holdovers, only Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All by Myself showed any staying power. The Jennifer Aniston romance ($4.3 million) was a box-office wallflower. And how lifeless is the femme horror comedy Jennifer's Body ($3.5 million)? In her host monologue on Saturday Night Live this weekend, the movie's star, Megan Fox, didn't even mention the film, though...

...There's also political reality. Set aside for a moment the formidable lobbying power of real estate agents and homebuilders, as well as the fact that one of the Senate's biggest tax-credit boosters used to sell houses for a living, and you're still left with homeowners - also known as voters. The plan is to continue building Hummers in the U.S., not in China where the prevailing wages, $12 to $25 per day, are significantly lower...

Senator Kennedy had the economic and political clout to challenge the powerful on behalf of the powerless and did so many times. To me, an African American who grew up in the South and was inspired and emboldened by the leadership of Martin Luther King Jr. and the Kennedys, he did even more. Like King and like his brothers John and Robert, Ted spoke truth to power, but when black folk in the South who thought themselves powerless were moved to action by his message, he spoke truth to impotence and generated power. ...business community there is clear support for a closer relationship. Claude Bébéar, who heads the Institut Montaigne, is a former CEO of insurance giant Axa and a formidable corporate power broker. At a recent panel discussion in Paris, Léo Apotheker, the CEO of German software firm SAP, endorsed many of the institute's ideas and lamented that the recent financial crisis "showed the nonexistence of Europe." He also advocated merging the French employers' association Medef with its German counterpart, the Federation of German Industries...
