...country riven by Monarchists and Maoists, Girija Prasad Koirala served as peacemaker. Nepal's four-time Prime Minister and champion of democracy died on March 20 at 86. His six decades in politics began amid striking laborers in jute mills, rose through civil war and regicide and ended with the future of his impoverished nation still poised on a knife edge...

...Given how appealing Stewart is, with her bravado masking the permanent vulnerability of a good heart, the prospect of seeing her meet some grisly fate at the hands of her companions is even gloomier than counting how many more Twilight movies she has to make. Director Udayan Prasad keeps hyping the possibility by cutting to unsettling flashbacks featuring Maria Bello as Brett's former boss and crush. Is Brett wounded or the wounder? That boilerplate suspense technique is too obviously manipulative to have the creepy power of Gordy's resentful glances. (See the top 10 movies...

As a result, the role consumer spending plays in China's economy continues to head in the wrong direction. Private consumption accounted for a mere 35% of GDP in 2008, down from 46% in 2000. China's ratio stands at about half that...

...suffer. "I don't see any evidence" that China's economy is rebalancing, MIT's Huang says. "Its always difficult to get consumption to grow in a limited period of time." Greater consumer spending in China could have a big impact as well on the world economy. Cornell's Prasad figures that if China can increase growth of private consumption to 20% a year (much higher than the trend of nominal GDP growth of about 15%), global GDP growth would get a meaningful 0.25% boost. (See TIME's China covers...
