...Taliban's dynamiting of the giant Buddhas of Bamiyan in March 2001 was only the most dramatic expression of their mission to obliterate all "idolatrous" images from Afghanistan's pre-Islamic past. They also destroyed 2,500 other cultural artifacts from Kabul's National Museum of Afghanistan, many of them priceless. But thanks to the heroic efforts of curators, they didn't get it all. Hidden Afghanistan, a traveling exhibit that recently opened in Amsterdam's Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), gives a tantalizing glimpse of Afghanistan's stunningly diverse cultural legacy, and tells an engrossing tale about how these remnants...
...picture was less clear-cut-all question marks, close calls, and sagging spirits. John McCain, the Arizona senator whose campaign spent the summer in ICU, was coming on strong in a bid to repeat his 2000 New Hampshire victory. But then former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney dominated the final pre-election debate, a feat he followed up with a massive turnout operation that included 100,000 phone calls to prospective voters. Romney's well-funded campaign took a big hit in Iowa on Thursday, when former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee whipped him badly, and a second loss in New Hampshire...
...Romney - the Salt Lake City Olympic organizer who continues to tout his electoral "silver" medals - desperately needs a gold. Romney's long-stated strategy was to win Iowa and New Hampshire through aggressive campaigning and big spending. He fought mightily to rescue his New Hampshire campaign, dominating the final pre-election debate and deploying a massive phone bank to make 100,000 last-minute phone calls to prospective voters. But his mid-day confidence wilted as McCain's grew into the evening. In a sign he is learning how to lose, he called McCain to congratulate him - something...
...December issue of Animal Behavior, males in a group of about 50 long-tailed macaques in Kalimantan Tengah, Indonesia, traded grooming services for sex with females; researchers, who studied the monkeys for some 20 months, found that males offered their payment up-front, as a kind of pre-sex ritual. It worked. After the females were groomed by male partners, female sexual activity more than doubled, from an average of 1.5 times an hour to 3.5 times. The study also showed that the number of minutes that males spent grooming hinged on the number of females available at the time...
...these undeclared voters? For starters, they aren't as independent as the media and political campaigns usually make them out to be. Andrew Smith, director of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center and the state's pre-eminent pollster, says the great majority of those who register as undeclared actually think of themselves - and consistently vote - as either Republicans or Democrats. "They're not really independents, and it's very misleading to call them that," says Smith, who estimates that only 8% of the New Hampshire electorate truly wanders from one party primary to the other. What's more...
