DeShazer, an Oregon turkey farmer who survived three years in Japanese prison camps, was at first as bitter about the Japanese as Fuchida was about the Americans. But DeShazer began to read the Bible during his imprisonment; his attitude changed, and he returned to Japan in 1949 to preach Christianity to his old enemies. Fuchida was intrigued when he read about DeShazer's arrival. He bought a Bible himself. When he read the New Testament story of Christ forgiving his enemies, his old hostility dropped. After the Apostle Paul, Francis Xavier was probably the greatest missionary ever to preach the Christian Gospel. In ten years time, the 16th century Jesuit fought his way through the rediscovered countries of the East, often by himself, to make thousands of Asian converts. Thanks in part to the range and speed of his missionary work, however, Xavier's legend has become barnacled with a mass of apocryphal stories, many of them still piously recounted...

One of the girl slaves turned, scowling, and sprinkled some holy water in the reporter's direction. "I preach hatred of those who hate Jesus," Father Feeney continued. "Am I a hate-priest when I want...
...sick brother; Friar Juniper's selflessness triumphing over the bloody tyrant Nicolaio, and causing him to lift his siege of the city of Viterbo in a sequence filled with fire and spectacle. The picture ends with Francis and his disciples going forth separately into the world to preach peace-to Siena, Florence, Arezzo, Pisa and Spoleto...
