...Getting early voting done can be a hassle. A big reason, besides the reduced number of polling sites, is that since there are only a handful of central voting sites, distinct ballots must be printed out onsite to match each voter's particular precinct. In Palm Beach County, for example, there are 185 different ballots. Palm Beach's de facto interim elections chief, assistant county administrator Brad Merriman, has had to enact several changes in recent weeks to ensure those votes "are all accounted for, every step of the way" between now and Nov. 4; one such change has been...

...closely contested Ohio race. He manned the 10-hour polling lines on campus, dispensing water, pizza and umbrellas to the stalwarts who stuck around in the rain to cast their votes. To him, the inadequate planning was obvious: registration had surged since 2000, he notes, but the campus precinct had been allocated no additional voting machines. That left two machines for 1,300 voters. "The media angle was, Aren't these young kids heroic to have stood in line all day?" he says. ...Obama's strategists have long believed that a stronger ground game could turn narrow Democratic losses of recent years into wins. They note that Al Gore never would have needed Florida if he had instead built an organization to turn out an average of 15 additional votes per precinct in Missouri. Team Obama is also vowing to register 75,000 new voters in Missouri - and voter rolls are indeed swelling, up by 200,000 so far, though the secretary of state's office doesn't keep track of how many are Democrats or Republicans...

...Richet, who did the 2005 remake of John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13, is one of those French directors - Luc Besson (The Professional) and Pierre Morel (District B13) are others - who have renounced the glacial minimalism of their national film style for the wild vigor of American B movies. As briskly as the Mesrine story hurtles through its heists, holdups and hair-breadth escapes, the camera moves faster, but always purposefully. Richet brings all the characters to plausible, entertaining life, but Cassel easily dominates the action. Often, as in Eastern Promises, he plays the strutting punk with more bravado...
