...when civilian casualties of all peoples are counted equally. As in Afghanistan, in the discussion of the planned invasion of Iraq, the question of the number of expected Iraqi casualties has not even been raised. Until that question is discussed and the real cost of war—including precious foreign lives as well as precious American ones—can be considered, nobody should be inclined to support this war or any other...
This time the clerics did not make such an appeal, and the radical plot resulted in failure. The American army--and its allies--did not become mired in Afghanistan, and it was the Taliban that was routed. Al-Qaeda's infrastructure was significantly damaged, even if precious little is known about the fate of bin Laden and his lieutenants or their ability to mount new operations around the globe. He doesn't stint on the bloody details of a tiger's diet, or the immense physical suffering Pi is forced to endure. Martel has done his homework: if a tiger and an Indian boy found themselves floating in the Pacific, this is how each would respond. Most importantly, Martel doesn't make the mistake of anthropomorphizing his tiger. Richard Parker is an animal and a killer...
