...curiously refreshing. So is the notion that a studio would lavish a huge budget on a movie whose basic business is consciously to satirize a genre that until recently tended to be low-rent and pretty much self-satirizing. Maybe this is an all too conspicuous waste of precious cinematic resources. But you have to admire everyone's chutzpah: the breadth of Burton's (and writer Jonathan Gems') movie references, which range from Kurosawa to Kubrick; and above all their refusal to offer us a single likable character. Perhaps they don't create quite enough deeply funny earthlings...

...Kerri Strug, 19. Considered a senior citizen in the rather precious world of gymnastics, the tiny Olympian displayed courage not usually associated with high school seniors. Indeed, a replay of her dash down the ramp on a badly sprained left ankle should be shown to those prima donnas who beg out of the lineup because of the slightest twinge. Let the pro who doesn't want to play on a particular day watch a tape of Strug doing her Yurchenko 1 1/2 vault, nailing her landing and then keeping her balance as she pivots to the judges on one foot...

...Relativity (ABC) At first this new drama from Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz seemed a tad too precious, a touch too eager to wrap up its conflicts with tidy bows. But the series, focused on a pair of new young lovers, quickly managed to ground itself more firmly in the rhythms of a real relationship. Poignant but not overwrought, Relativity has become one of TV's finest hours...
