...general idea that change is popular, and therefore increases sales, threatens all kinds of cherished institutions. If lots of people can destroy an institution by telling a pollster that they prefer soft drinks to be sweeter and lighter, will the next step be for meat-packers to start producing a low-calorie hamburger by just adding a lot of airy filler? And will somebody then try combining it with goat cheese? Is anything safe? Will Hershey bars be filled with raisins and Oreo cookies with pink icing? Will apple pie be made la mode with Tofutti...

Henry Grunwald's Essay is a fitting finale to your memorable issue, but I do not agree with the rough translation of his father's poetic phrase "Deine Heimat ist wo das Glck dich grsst." Rather than translating it "Home is where you are happy," I prefer the more literal "Your home is where good fortune welcomes you." I think that expresses more accurately the reason immigrants want to make the U.S. their home. Sol Z. Abraham Denver...

...written at a third-grade reading level. In fact, by my count, there were only five words over two syllables; and lyrics like “this was a real nice clambake, and we all had a real nice time!” can grate even on ears that prefer minimalism...
