Burning Issue. The U.S. presence, and its use of the island as an operations base for Viet Nam, have provided ultranationalist rightists and anti-American leftists in Japan with a burning issue against the pro-U.S. government of Premier Eisaku Sato. Last week the U.S. approached the difficult decision. As Japan's Foreign Minister visited the White House to open formal talks on reversion, the Nixon Administration let it be known that it will soon move to return Okinawa and the other Ryukyus to Japanese control...

SURPRISE has been the only predictable quality in French politics of late, and when the people of France went to the polls this week to choose a new President, they still had some surprises to offer. According to form, ex-Premier Georges Pompidou ran well ahead of the other six candidates. As expected, he failed to attain a majority of the votes cast, necessitating a run-off election on June 15. He was only trying to explain why civil and political liberties in Greece remain suspended under martial law. But it was the sort of metaphor that appealed quite naturally to Assemblagist Vlassis Canairis, 40, who studied medicine at Athens University before turning to the practice of painting and sculpture in 1950. The exhibition that he has mounted in Athens' small "New Gallery" illustrates its vividness...

...parole violation. He is believed to have left the United States that same month after shaving off his beard to alter his appearance. It has since grown back, and he seems to have gained weight in Havana. Pringle reported that Cleaver has toured Cuba, but has not yet met Premier Fidel Castro. Cleaver's presence has been ignored by the heavily censored Cuban press. He refused to say much after being discovered, but did tell Pringle that he was working on a sequel to Soul on Ice. Its success could be important to some of the people he left...
