During this busy week Mr. Green was sought out by the "John L. Lewis of France," Léon Jouhaux of the potbelly and off-centre goatee, whose aggressive political unions are a great concern of Premier Edouard Daladier. M. Jouhaux, en route to an international labor conference called by the "John L. Lewis of Mexico," big-eared Vicente Lombardo Toledano, made a pilgrimage to Atlantic City to discuss with Mr. Green (who is boycotting the Mexico City conference as "communistic") the problems of Labor in relation to world peace and war. Not mentioned was the John L. Lewis...

Ernst Kundt, youthful firebrand and spokesman in Prague of Sudeten Nazi Fuhrer Konrad Henlein, did his best last week to provoke a complete break with Czechoslovak Premier Dr. Milan Hodza. "I put on record," announced Spokesman Kundt, "that the Government's proposals and ours are irreconcilable. They are based on absolutely contradictory ideas...

...habit of forcing his Fascist Party chiefs to jump through burning hoops, hurdle bayonet rows and dive over tanks, bespectacled, stocky, 34-year-old French Minister of Education Jean Zay last week started up 15,782 foot Mt. Blanc. Early entrants for the stiff mountain climb had included Vice Premier Camille Chautemps and Minister of Public Works Ludovic Oscar Frossard (later resigned) (see above). M. Chautemps, however, wrenched an arm at tennis, dropped out. M. Frossard took a test climb, returned puffing, decided to fly over Mt. Blanc instead...

Diplomatic rumor had it that "Henlein showed himself most intransigent." But shortly thereafter Herr Henlein assembled his lieutenants in the Hotel Veimar in Marienbad. There he outlined the Sudeten demands anew, clarified along lines suggested by Lord Runciman. Meanwhile, to make the clamorous Henlein minority perhaps less intransigent, Premier Hodza soon after announced he would give choice political plums to Sudeten Germans by appointing them to seven large postmasterships, a district public works superintendency, two district governorships, more jobs in the railroad administration...

Last fortnight Nova Scotia's Premier Angus Macdonald, a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University, spoke at the opening of a cooperative housing project at a new town, Tompkinsville, named for Father Tompkins. When Father Jimmy rose to speak at the University conference, his audience roared applause. Two days later, an outsider, Political Economist Harold Adams Innis of the University of Toronto, told the conference: "You have reached the dangerous stage in which all men think well of you." Less gallant was the University's Peter Nearing's plea for group medical care: "Our women are . . . puny...
