Authoress Buck is a converted missionary. Her life among the Chinese has convinced her that men are indeed brothers under their skins. Her publicly professed desire for a "creedless faith" led to her resignation as a Presbyterian missionary (TIME, May 8), but in her novels and stories she continues to preach her creedless doctrine. The 14 stories in The First Wife show Chinese torn between Western ideas and their own traditions, drowned by revolution, inundated by famine-spreading Hoods, but always pathetically human, essentially understandable. Some of her people: A wife who has waited seven years for her husband...
...Yorkers who crowded into the Greenwich Presbyterian Church one night last week had trouble believing their eyes and ears. On the platform 20 small children, several of them only two, the oldest seven, were giving a concert. They sat on tiny red chairs, played on violins so small that they looked like toys. But the instruments were real and so was the music that the New York Baby Orchestra made. Round Monte Collins was so young and unsteady that he kept falling off his chair. Little Marie ("Peewee") Jarecki, her hair frizzed and beribboned to suit the band...
...further resemblance. Both are cool, shrewd, quiet, bespectacled. Dr. Dodds is the youngest Princeton president since Aaron Burr (32)* in 1748 and Samuel Davies (36) in 1759. No other Princeton president save Woodrow Wilson has been a non-clergyman, but Dr. Dodds, like Wilson, is the son of a Presbyterian minister. Born in Utica. Pa. he grew up in Grove City and took his A. B. degree in 1909 at Grove City College. He studied at Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania, taught economics at Purdue, political science at Western Reserve. Lecturing at other colleges, he did not settle...
Year ago Dr. Leon Decatur Young of Dallas, Tex., onetime vice moderator of the Presbyterian Church, set about helping his parishioners recover their "lost sense of sin." He devised a "Sin-Board" with 84 items, to be checked off by self-examining sinners. Last week as the Presbyterian General Assembly closed its annual meeting in Columbus. Ohio. Dr. Leon Decatur Young passed out copies of the Sin-Board among his fellow delegates: the Presbyterian evangelism division had indorsed it. There are small Sin-Boards. 6x9 in., for use during sermons, and cardboard sheets 40 x 48 in., which sell...
...Columbus, Ohio last week met 1,500 U. S. Presbyterians in their annual General Assembly. Fundamentalists had come bringing threats, chief among them Dr. John Gresham Machen of Philadelphia who last month stirred up the row leading to the resignation of Author Pearl Sydenstricker Buck as a mission teacher in China (TIME, May 8). Since then Dr. Machen had flayed Mrs. Buck for an "antiChristian propagandist,'' excoriated the Presbyterian Foreign Missions board for its "Yes-&-No" attitude, called everybody names including even much-revered Board Secretary Robert Elliott Speer whom, by implication, he called "dishonest" and "evasive...
