...northern Iraq, the regional government is already moving ahead with oil deals of its own that the central government in Baghdad considers illegal. Nevertheless, several smaller oil firms from Austria, Hungary, India, Canada and South Korea have signed deals with the Kurdish Regional Government. But most big players at present appear to be eyeing potential ventures in Iraq's vast oil territory around Basra instead. Years of neglect have left many oil fields there looking like junkyards. Rusting vehicles, heaps of trash and pools of spilled oil litter a hazy expanse dotted with plumes of flames from gas flares...

...That cosmopolitan history has been maintained in the house's present rebirth as Paradise Road Tintagel Colombo, www.tintagelcolombo.com - a luxury hotel and restaurant opened in 2007 by Colombo designer and homeware retailer Udayshanth Fernando. And while perhaps not the unreconstructed revolutionary that Iran's hard-liners so admire, Qalibaf is unabashedly loyal to Supreme Leader Ayatullah...

...competes as an 11-year-old in provincial and regional age-ranked competitions. Her national identity card, she said, had been changed to reflect the false birth-date. "It's no big deal," she insisted. "Most of my friends do it, too." Her coach, who hadn't been present when I interviewed the girl, denied any age-fixing at the school, although he said he was quite sure it happened at other academies...
