...poorest of the poor don't plan for the long term. The problem is that in present circumstances, their plans are little lessons in tragedy. On a reporting trip a few weeks ago to southern Ethiopia, where hunger now threatens millions, photographer Thomas Dworzak and I visited the village of Gode. Some 20 children had died there. We saw goats, cows and chickens roaming. We asked, Why hadn't the villagers slaughtered the animals? Germeda Koro, who had two children being treated for malnutrition, replied: "Look, maybe one or two children get sick. But if you kill your animals...
...revised to 4.6 million and 75,000 after the government protested] over the scale of the problem? Because their assessment was patently false. I do not think there was ill intention on their part. But he was never quite in step with the new Russia. To Solzhenitsyn, Russia meant the old Russia of the 19th century, a nostalgic, spiritual Russia of the soul. To Russians, Russia was something else - an increasingly Western and forward-looking and materialistic nation...
...country in the world better prepared than Denmark to play host to a climate summit that could - just maybe - decide the fate of the world. As you leave Copenhagen's airport, you see soaring wind turbines along the side of the road, spinning in the nearly always present breeze. Get used to the sight - Denmark is a world leader in wind energy, and produces more than 10% of its power from turbines. That's meant cleaner air and greener jobs. The homegrown wind company Vestas is a world leader earning $8 billion a year, an impressive figure in a country...
