...permanent selection of men for the Freshman Glee Club was made about a week ago, and since that time the improvement made by the club in singing has been apparent. The number of men at present on the club is thirty-two. Heretofore the freshman glee clubs have contained not more than twenty-seven voices, but this year, owing to the closeness of the competition, it was thought best to try the experiment of going beyond the usual limit. If it is found later on that the club would do better with fewer men, probably about five voices will...

...voices are all good, and most of the men have a decided musical talent. The most prominent fault in their singing, at present, is in the lack of harmony in the voices. The men sing well individually, but there is a perceptible lack of blending in the different tones. Rehearsals are being held three times a week, and the club is being drilled as thoroughly as possible by the leader, H. S. Potter. The other officers of the club are S. Howell, president; J. C. The certainty that there is good material in the club is encouraging, and if faithful work is done by every member there can be little doubt of success. The most important duty for each member at present is to attend every rehearsal. The men need, more than anything else, practice in singing together. It is sure that, however energetic a leader and however much musical talent the club may have, unless the members each show their personal interest in the success of the organization by regular attendance...

All the other old men are either candidates for the university crew or have not yet presented themselves. The crew has all the faults that are peculiar to new men. They lack control over their bodies, and never having rowed in the water, are very irregular. The crew has been rowing somewhat as follows, although the make up is not at all decided as yet: Stroke, Vaughan, 160 lbs.; 7, Parker...

There is at present a very bitter rivalry between the University Glee Club and the Apollo Club at Yale. The latter club was organized early last fall by A. E. Jenks, '89, who is one of the leading literary men in college. The efforts of the club have met with great success and now the musical honors of the college are divided between the two clubs. The members of the university club have remonstrated with the manager of the Apollo Club, but he cannot be persuaded to disband his organization. On Monday the university club held a meeting and voted...
