...standing there thinking, I am a captive. But a willing one. Though I'm startled at having been spot-cast to play Travolta to his Stanwyck, I'm also tickled by what his actress wife Kelly Preston, who a few minutes before served us iced tea and scones, might find a curious sight: one middle-aged, heavyset man bear-hugging another. In a way, Travolta's giving me an in-person demonstration of the intimate bond he has created with moviegoers and is ever ready to display. "I have a tacit agreement with the audience," he tells me when...

...Bachelor Mother: she notices an abandoned infant outside an orphanage, gathers the child up and is thought to be its mother; comic discomfort ensues. On rare occasions, and with back-breaking dexterity, a gifted writer could work the sex act into a movie's plot. Preston Sturges' The Miracle of Morgan's Creek: on a one-night stand, a pretty young blond gets drunk and pregnant, and drags her very unsuitable boyfriend along to help her cope with the consequences. Hilarity, at breakneck speed and daredevil heights, ensues...

I just read a long story by Edgar Allen Poe. A novel by a friend of mine called John Preston called, The Dig, which I think is very fine. I am fairly omnivorous I guess. Hmm? what is by the bedside? I am re-reading Christopher Hitchen's book on God, because I am going to be on stage talking to him about it. I have been reading some history...

...became clear toward year’s end that the success or failure of the Crimson wrestling season would be decided by just four performances at the NCAA Championships in Auburn Hills, Mich. Harvard had four wrestlers qualify for the nationals: tri-captain Max Meltzer, tri-captain Robbie Preston, sophomore Louis Caputo, and freshman J. P. O’Connor. The Crimson did not disappoint. The team put up historic numbers at the tournament, earning its highest point total ever at nationals (29), and seeing three of its four wrestlers (Meltzer, Caputo and O’Connor) qualify...

...would quarrel with the substance of some Valenti decisions, but I enjoyed the man's style; I was amused by his presumption. With the build of a miniature bulldog and his fondness for a wildly ornate, orotund oratory, he was a throwback character out of Preston Sturges or Allen's Alley. He may have raised winces on the faces of the new-breed, laid-back moguls. But I'm guessing Valenti didn't mind being smiled at. If he was a figure of fun, he had fun being that figure...
