My Friends concerns the infrequently amusing forays of a group of five stalwarts (Noiret, Ugo Tognazzi, Gastone Moshin, Duilio Del Prete, Adolfo Celi) who break out of their conventional, half-failing lives to have a little fun. This usually involves playing practical jokes-such as slapping in sequence the faces of passengers leaning out the windows of a departing train-and acting in general like sailors on their first shore leave...
...become lost in synthetic giddiness. There are 16 Cole Porter tunes, so many that the movie seems to be strung together from a series of song cues. What passes for plot concerns the romances of two couples-Burt Reynolds and, inevitably, Cybill Shepherd; Madeline Kahn and Duilio Del Prete -as they sing and dance through some smoggy dream of the '30s. The couples do not sing very well, though, and in dancing resemble a troop of hikers trying to extinguish a campfire...
...generally empty, the suckers sitting in the audience can lessen the pain somewhat by singing along with "You're the Top." "Lot's Misbehave" and other Porter masterpieces. The plot is a typical romantic quadrangle between Shepherd, 'Reynolds, Kahn and a stereotyped greasy Italian gambler played by Diullio del Prete. They cavort between two hotel rooms, one mansion, several parks, two formal dances, one race course, a plethora of white Rolls Royces and the Lord and Taylor Ladies Room. Eventually everyone ends up with the right mate and lives happily ever after. The genre is basically Fred Astaire Ginger Rogers...
