...roundup of what a Tanzanian police spokesman called "dubious characters" may even be motivated by the government's concern too nip in the bud any signs of Islamic militancy. "It appears the Tanzanians have had these people under surveillance for some time and are using the bombing as a pretext to arrest them," says TIME reporter Clive Mutiso. A Tanzanian official's statement that "we cannot say we have got somebody who is really responsible" but "we think we are doing well" underlines the grounds for skepticism. U.S. investigators continue to probe for the forensic evidence crucial to establishing...

Conveniently, the leak also provided another pretext for invoking executive privilege. You can hear the arguments already. Why let Clinton consigliere Bruce Lindsey testify if Starr is going to leak it? And here lies perhaps a most important motivation: slowing Starr's progress on Monica. The White House is fighting a two-front war. The first battle is the Jones trial: if Clinton prevails there, and his lawyers are confident that he will, he has a stronger case for defending himself against Starr. A victory over Jones would boost Clinton's image as the beleaguered victim and trivialize Starr...
...much. Guided by the family's (now dead) housekeeper, we are taken back to the Poconos in the 1950s, on a summer weekend when several characters encounter a new love or are reunited with an old one. It would be nice to describe this as a flimsy pretext for a batch of Simon gag lines, except that the gags are too lame even for Simon in a nostalgic haze. One character is a boorish Italian stud with a penchant for malapropisms (he calls Roman gladiators "gladiolas"), and the play's comic piece de resistance is, so help me, a bird...
...speak for all Christians--or all Catholics--I believe the "message of compassion in Christ's teachings" that Roberts mentions is entirely separate from the political agenda of conservative Christian groups. How ironic that anyone would use the phrase "compassion in Christ's teachings" as a pretext for persecution. To those Christians who quote the Bible to oppose homosexuality, speak for yourselves. If you want to speak of "toss[ing] aside [God's] loving commandment of salvation," as Roberts does, you may want to examine exactly what that phrase means. --Brendan G.
