Most exotic: Isamu Noguchi's Radio Nurse, a grilled bakelite face-prettier as a radio than as a nurse. Most graceful: a brightly colored terra cotta mother and child by Waylande Gregory. Most arresting: José de Creeft's familiar strong and peaceful Head in Belgian granite. Most horrendous: a lifesize, lifeless woman by Alexander Archipenko. Her name...
Last fortnight a similar and even prettier experiment was described by Dr. William Thalheimer of Manhattan, and Drs. Donald Young Solandt and Charles Herbert Best of Toronto, in The Lancet, British medical journal. They reported removing the kidneys from a dog, thus preventing him from excreting the nitrogenous poisons carried in his blood stream. Several days later, when his blood was filled with urea, they anesthetized him, connected an artery and vein to a vein and artery of a healthy, anesthetized dog. The small connecting pipes were attached to a specially designed pump which exchanged more than six quarts...
Artist Evergood's sensations are never any prettier than what he observes, and what he observes in Manhattan is apparently seldom pretty. When he draws a nude model he shows that her feet are dirty and her face is a lamentable part of her body. When he paints down-&-outers in a hobo "jungle" he distorts them to get an effect equivalent to the ugliness he feels. In last week's show of 22 paintings were several in Evergood's vein of wild, clownish humor. Sunday in Astoria and Recreation, big canvasses composed in bright, crude colors...
...stayed in his shaded study, ate oranges, made wise remarks to the English consul and watched the shells exploding in the blue waters of the bay, grew mysteriously old, suspicious, weary. Milagritos, who prepared bandages, went with the rebel fleet on its biggest battle, seemed to grow younger, prettier, less communicative. When Milagritos' cousin was sentenced to be shot, Mr. Witt raced to save him, although he had always been mildly disturbed by Milagritos' affection for the boy. But when he finally had the power to stop the execution, he remembered little ambiguous remarks Milagritos had made, wondered...
...also the fault of occasional banal dialogue. It is too much to expect, of course, that the scenario writers can make each line original as well as humorous; but just the same, you are conscious of the presence of well-wrinkled repartee. It doesn't make Bette Davis look prettier to hear her say: "I'll swallow my pride and go to him"; after the first laugh Leslie Howard seems a bit silly to say, when a knock on the door finds him in the arms of his stage partner, "Your husband." Perhaps you are the kind who can overlook...
