...seven years in the writing (and twenty years of thought) only to be accused of classic black emasculation. I assured him that such would not be the Harvard case: the audience would be racially mixed, and while he might anticipate familiar challenges I felt that a stimulating balance would prevail. "Are the blacks gonna picket me?" Styron asked on arrival. My God, I hoped not. "They picket me everywhere I go," he said a bit wearily. We passed a pleasant afternoon doing equal damage to a fifth of Scotch and our respective livers...

...argument has obvious flaws. With former fedayeen at its helm, Jordan might march against Israel before the advocates of peace have a chance to prevail. Further, there would almost certainly be a savage internal dogfight as the leaders of rival factions struggled for paramountcy?and the battle would be complicated by the presence of Jordan's Bedouins, who make up 35% of the population and despise the fedayeen. The greatest immediate flaw, of course, is that Jordan's young King?as long as his shaky throne lasts?will have no intention of handing his kingdom over to his adversaries...

They generally spoke of the war as simply a "wrong" policy, disastrous for the United States as well as for Indochina. There seems to be total confidence that in the long run they will prevail. ...ghastly gunplay in San Rafael in a curious way pointed up the hazards of the President as film critic. In praising the new John Wayne film Chisum, he seems to have overlooked the fact that in it the good guys prevail over the bad guys only by taking the law into their own hands. That, of course, is what the "revolutionaries" of Marin County were attempting with such bloody results. Vigilantism appeals not only to conservatives; it is no accident that S.D.S. members, too, loved the John Wayne of True Grit, last year's western in which Marshal Cogburn...

...controlled, and the top jobs are held by whites or a handful of privileged blacks. The fact is, however, that the Caribbean's natural resources are relatively scarce, and even if all the industries were run by blacks instead of whites, a serious shortage of jobs would still prevail. Unemployment is rising and the birth rate remains high; 62% of Trinidad's population are under 25. To make matters worse, the Caribbean's traditional safety valve-emigration-has been almost shut off by both Britain...
