...million in box office receipts, many did -- you might have noticed a few of the trailers preceding the film promoted movies scheduled for release late in the bitter winter months. At that same screening, you might also have noticed a conspicuous lack of substance in these preview slots. One, hyping an animated feature called Titan A.E. simply featured Matt Damon voicing over images of a futuristic Earth being attacked by vicious bug-like creatures ripped off from Starship Troopers. Another, for the aforementioned Anna and the King was no less grandiose, featuring sweeping scenes of tropical jungles, ornate palaces...

...follows" tagline (that fascinating scene, incidentally, is nowhere to be found in the actual film). Artisan Entertainment, recognizing the success that the Blair Witch advertising brought them, developed a devilish little pattern in their marketing strategy. First, they design an ultra-cool web page. Then, they show their enigmatic preview to those same people who were sucked in by Blair Witch hype. Finally, they sit back and watch the web geeks do the work, generating more buzz and rumor than substance...

Architect Christian De Portzamparc's innovative 23-story building in Manhattan with a faceted, overlapping glass facade [FALL PREVIEW, Sept. 6] is indeed striking, but perhaps he has unknowingly taken a leaf from Apple Computer's book. With a Bondi Blue color typical of the iMac and a translucent exterior, can this building be mistaken as anything but an iRise?
