Coldplay Rocks As a music journalist I take issue with Josh Tyrangiel's swipes at Coldplay, in both his preview of the new album [June 9] and his latest feature ("Hit Restart," [June 16]). Tyrangiel calls the British foursome "annoying," "crib-safe" and rockers who "pound listeners into submission." Give me a break. As if to defend his distaste, Tyrangiel trots out an absurd, less-than-articulate statement from Chuck Klosterman ("Coldplay is absolutely the s - iest f - ing band I've ever heard in my entire f - ing life"), and a pompous statement from the New York Times...

...preview stories on Cannes, some movie each year is referred to as the most eagerly anticipated of the festival. There should be another category - most acutely dreaded - and this time that was Che. At an announced running time of 4hr.28min. (it wound up at about 4hr.20min.), and with the madly idiosyncratic Benicio Del Toro as his star, the film wasn't promising so much as it was threatening...

...Golden Compass was middling-good, with a beguiling central performance by 13-year-old Dakota Blue Richards, a slinky turn by Nicole Kidman as an evil-stepmom type and a nifty polar-bear fight. But the film never cohered, and at the end it trailed off into a preview of the two sequels that now don't look as if they'll be made. The first Narnia movie was middling-bad, its four lead child actors displaying little charm, their world holding lesser wonder. But, hey, it was a hit because the Lewis books had been popular with the parents...

...initiative is called Friend Connect and it begins tonight when any site can apply to be in the Google pilot program (they call it a "preview release") here. Note: that site won't be live until Monday night. During the next few days, Google will choose one or two dozen sites to participate. Over the course of the next several months, the company will collect site, user and developer feedback on how the program is working. Then, if all goes well, in a few months Google will open up Friend Connect to any website or blog that wants to participate...
