...Previous to Murphy's feat, Weston's double had scored two men brining the score within reaching distance of a Lowell victory. The crowd was tense as Murphy stepped to the plate; even the Deacon and Bellboy stands were silent. Gilbert the king snake, Lowell mascot, nervously shed half his skin as two strikes were called. Then, contradicting the Casey legend, Murphy connected, and the Straus trophy was cinched...
...best be shown by tracing its operations and examining the President's report. The argument, first, that the Council should not be the victim of commitments by its predecessor is well taken, for obviously a new Council may be unwilling to undertake an investigation left over from the previous year's program. Suggestions, not orders, are all that should be passed on. Together, the two reports by the Committee on Research were a startling expose of the double evil in Harvard of poor teaching, due to the pressure of research, and of one-sided distribution of funds to departments...
...temporary recovery few qualified observers deny. Main objection to resumption of spending has been that the Recovery apparently lasts only so long as the spending and the Government cannot spend forever. To a press conference last week. Apparently all that remained was for Wendell Willkie and David Lilienthal, who call...
Even today few piano accordion squeezers rank as virtuosos. But this week, after an accordion recital in Philadelphia's staid Academy of Music, Philadelphia critics admitted that their townsman, dark, 30-year-old Andy Arcari, could claim the title. Accordionist Arcari, who had given previous recitals in Pittsburgh and Toledo, played a program ranging from Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue to Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen. Said Critic Henry Pleasants: "Here was a brilliance in scale and arpeggio passages that many a violinist or pianist could envy." Virtuoso Arcari, who makes most of his living teaching and playing...
