Good Hunting. The 1945 seal catch off Alaska's desolate Pribilof Islands was the largest (76,700 skins) since conservation of the decimated seal herd was started in 1911. An estimated 10,000 fur coats can be made from this year's $4 million catch...
Some 400 grinning natives greeted the three Washington specialists (a nose-&-throat man, an internist, a dentist). They had arrived in the Pribilof Islands, north of the Aleutians, for a quick checkup on the health of the seal hunters, who are wards of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The doctors found the Aleuts in generally excellent health. But they were shocked when Aleut children opened their mouths. Their teeth were bad (the dentist promptly took samples of their drinking water for analysis). Their tonsils were worse...
...good harbor but some flat land for airfields. The busy little Japs were under cover of Aleutian fog, and probably building air and submarine bases, emplacing anti-aircraft guns, sneaking in shells, bombs and torpedoes. By the time the females arrive from the south with their pups, weeks later, the bulls have battled themselves ragged and bloody fighting for places to set up their harems on the rocky ledges of the rookery. Each bull takes some...
Fortnight ago, after a year's notice, Japan ended the Convention, will presumably begin hunting seals in the sea. Reason given: seals were eating squid and devilfish sought by Japan's fishing fleet. Whatever the reason, it portends decimation or extermination for the seals. At the Pribilof killing grounds only the bachelors are slaughtered for the prime fur. In pelagic sealing hunters often shoot females with pups, often lose four out of five of the carcasses...
