...Postal Service's unofficial motto - but the economy might. With 9.5 billion fewer letters and packages delivered in the 2008 fiscal year compared with 2007, the biggest mail volume decline in history has contributed to the agency's $2.8 billion loss for the year. That partly explains why shipping prices will rise 5% this month (a bigger hike than all shipping increases in 2008), with a stamp price jump to follow in May. The decline could also put your local letter carrier out of a job, and it has even stoked fears that the centuries-old Postal Service could...

...Paying More for Gas, Voluntarily With his proposal for broad new energy taxes, Michael Kinsley gets my vote for insight of the year [Dec. 22]. I don't like high gas prices any more than the next guy, but I would rather put the money to good use in the U.S. than send it to OPEC. The American people have demonstrated beyond a doubt that they can and will get by with less gas if there is a compelling reason in the form of a higher price at the pump. The enormous, unstated side benefit of Kinsley's proposal...

...Guggenheim biography. While she was on the train home from New Delhi for the holidays, Banaji purchased five volumes of the Handbook of Social Psychology edited by Lindzey and Aronson, for five dollars, lured not so much by the books’ content as by their low price. By the time she arrived home 24 hours later, she had already devoured an entire volume. She says the combination of a focus on social process with an experimental approach presented by the book particularly appealed...

...lost. I know the dropping price of gas is an ominous indication of the contracting global economy, but I cheer up every time I drive by the pump ($1.78 a gallon!) in my new gas-sipping subcompact. Like some of my neighbors, I downsized last spring after years of driving a relative gas gulper. Small businesses nearby - the outfitter's store, the little cheesecake shop, the coffeehouse, even the independent bookstore - are still open. Word has it that one neighbor finally found a new job and another started a new career. Even die-hard Republicans have high hopes...

...reserves (which then charge several thousands of dollars for a "hunting package"). Texas alone has 1,100 licensed breeders with approximately 87,000 deer and a total economic impact of $652 million, according to a 2007 Texas A&M study. Breeders often sell deer at livestock auctions, where the price for a good buck can reach five figures (occasionally a champion buck, just like a prize bull, can sell for half a million dollars). Deer-breeding is the fastest-growing industry in rural America, according to that A&M study...
