Though already well-known in Catholic theological circles, the 50-year-old Father Joseph Ratzinger was prepared to live out a life of relative obscurity in the quiet confines of German academia. Then one day in 1977, the professor-priest received a fateful visit from a Church official in his study at the University of Regensburg. "We chatted about some insignificant matters," Ratzinger recalled in his memoirs "Milestones, 1927-1977" "and then finally he pressed a letter into my hand, telling me to read it and think it over at home...

...wielded a relatively light touch. In early July, respected preacher and religious activist Zhang Rongliang was jailed for seven and a half years on a pointedly non-religious charge: forging a passport. Later the same month, 82-year-old underground Catholic bishop Yao Liang was arrested along with another priest, according to Catholic activists. And on July 29 the resort city of Hangzhou was the site of what some witnesses call the biggest confrontation between security forces and Christians, a bloody clash over the demolition of a church involving thousands of protesters and police...

But don't expect the Catholic Church to start disputing Darwin's basic findings, which Pope John Paul II in 1996 called "more than a hypothesis." Moreover, advocates of the teaching in U.S. schools...

STEVEN SEAGAL is a man of many talents. The writer, director, producer and -- of course -- butt-kicking film star also sings and plays drums on his latest album, Mojo Priest. But he's proudest of his guitar skills. "You can't find another actor who can play guitar as good as me," he boasts. "Kevin Bacon, Keanu Reeves, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner they're not even in my universe."  His blues album features guest appearances by Bo Diddley and Pinetop Perkins as well as some new Seagal tunes, including one that ends with the lines: "I told...
