...posh Beverly Hills (zip code: 90210). Ratings, after a slow start, have grown steadily; the show draws more teenage viewers than any of its Thursday-night rivals (including top-rated Cheers) and, in some recent weeks, more teens than any other show on TV. Stars Shannen Doherty and Jason Priestley, along with co-star Luke Perry, have become teen fanzine favorites. Fox is so pleased that it has ordered 30 new episodes for the upcoming season (compared with the usual 22 or 24), and began airing them last week, a full two months before most of the network fall premieres...
Things are somewhat better in Hastings' staging of When We Are Married, J.B. Priestley's satire of the Yorkshire bourgeoisie circa 1908. The premise: three long-married couples discover that their wedlock may not be legal and suddenly are able to reconsider, with the wisdom of hindsight, the choices of youth. Two browbeaten wives and one henpecked husband toy with ditching their spouses, a notion that is faintly feminist for its time. ...which has been monitoring the drought situation from the start, issued a new report that increased the projected food need for 1988 from 950,000 tons to 1.3 million tons. So far, 550,000 tons have been promised by aid groups, or 42% of what will be needed. "It will take five months for a food shipment to get here if it ) is pledged this week," he said. "If we don't get the pledges now, there will...
...days the pace has quickened. Last week three transport planes left Europe for Ethiopia and are now airlifting food from Asmara, near the Red Sea port of Assab, to Mekele. The European Community, which organized the operation, eventually hopes to deploy ten planes. "The airlift is vital," says Priestley. "But 700,000 people in Tigre need food immediately, and the aircraft must be backed up by trucks. If we don't start widespread distribution, there will be famine camps...
This bifocal approach to the U.S. is hardly new: J.B. Priestley and his wife Jacquetta Hawkes did it in Journey Down a Rainbow 30 years ago. Nor is the Nicolson credulity a blessing: Adam describes a movie executive as "one dissertation short of a PhD at Harvard . . . Sometimes -- that was the crucial word -- he didn't think the hassle was worth the money." Generally, however, the men breeze through their missions with the jaunty patrician charm of the charmed. The cross fire of their letters -- a burst from Nigel, a counterburst from Adam -- is the British equivalent of the nautical...
