He owes his mixed Protestant and Roman Catholic training to the strictures of his British father, whose family has been Church of England "since Reformation times," and the meddling of an aunt who gives him holy pictures and sees that a priest baptizes him during a siege of whooping cough...

Perhaps the biggest lesson from the rapid rebound in Los Angeles gang murders, say cops and other gang experts, is that aggressive policing alone will never break the cycle of gang violence. Father Greg Boyle, a Jesuit priest who works in gang-infested Boyle Heights, says the antigang strategy developed in California and copied elsewhere "is bankrupt. The clip, filmed by the unit and obtained by a Serb human-rights investigator, aired last week in the Hague at the trial...

...throne room of Jerusalem's Greek Orthodox Patriarch in the Old City's Christian Quarter is at the heart of a maze of tunnels, sandstone stairways, narrow passages and courtyards bursting with almond blossom. Each night at 10 p.m., in a practice that dates back centuries, the priests of the Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulcher lock themselves into their ancient warren, shutting out the iniquitous world beyond their walls. Lately, though, they've concluded the biggest threat lies within - Patriarch Eirinaios I, who's at the center of a labyrinthine religious and legal scandal involving the alleged lease of Church...
