Taking Nexium, Prevacid or Prilosec--the so-called proton-pump inhibitors widely prescribed for heartburn--can keep acid-reflux disease in check. But a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association says they may put you at risk for pneumonia. Dutch researchers studied more than 360,000 patients and found that users of the powerful acid-fighting drugs were 89% more likely to develop pneumonia than people who no longer took them. Less potent acid reducers such as Pepcid and Tagamet also raised the risk of pneumonia, by 63%. Doctors say such drugs are so good at knocking...
...probably never met Myrtle Potter, but you may have taken some of the medicines she has marketed. At Merck in the early 1990s, her name became legend when she took charge of a struggling ulcer remedy called Prilosec and transformed it into a worldwide best seller. These drugs lend themselves to so-called direct-to-consumer (DTC) promotion, researchers said, because they treat common chronic conditions and have relatively mild side effects that do not require long disclaimers...
...wonder drugs in today's medical arsenal, the heartburn treatment Prilosec has long been the most successful. The stomach soother reaped an astonishing $6.2 billion in sales last year to make it the best-selling prescription drug ever--a title Prilosec stands to lose when its patent expires in October. But if the drug's maker, British firm AstraZeneca, behaves like many of its counterparts in the industry, it won't easily relinquish its monopoly. Indeed, sources confirmed to TIME that the Federal Trade Commission has quietly launched an investigation into whether AstraZeneca illegally blocked generic competition to protect...
