...least, the junta seems to be engaging all over the place. Last month its Prime Minister, General Thein Sein, became the highest-ranking Burmese official in 14 years to address the U.N. General Assembly. He told delegates that sanctions were "unjust." While in New York City, Thein Sein conferred with both Webb and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell. Back in Burma, Suu Kyi met a senior junta official and is thought to have discussed the lifting of sanctions...

...like the war in Afghanistan and the risk that the Horn of Africa will become a new center of global terrorism, it's not quite there. Much is going to depend on personnel. If the new President of the E.U. is a person of international stature (as former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the front-runner for the post, plainly is), able to project Europe's view while convincing the smaller members of the union that their voices count, then Europe is going to be a bigger player internationally. ...Sheen's ability to get under the skin of people we think we know well that makes him so compelling. His Blair may have a longer afterlife than the real one; Sheen will play the former Prime Minister (in a role again written by Morgan) opposite Dennis Quaid as Bill Clinton in The Special Relationship, due in 2011. Meanwhile, he moonlights, literally, as the werewolf Lucian in the Underworld series, and he'll appear as the vampire Aro in the upcoming Twilight sequel, New Moon...
