Margherita Boniver, an Italian Member of Parliament and longtime foreign policy advisor to Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, chastised the "French radical-chic" efforts to block extradition. "The fact that Carla Bruni [helped] Petrella avoid extradition to Italy is something grave," adding there appeared to be "a sort of convergence" with the Battisti case. "It's all unprecedented," Boniver told reporters...
...eight stories, which span the 1970s to the present, are bound by the character of K.K. Harouni, a distinguished landowner who becomes a sort of barometer for the state of the ruling class. In his prime, Harouni is a man of influence, commanding estates and legions of servants. At his death, the household is broken up, the house sold: "Gone, and they the servants would never find another berth like this one, the gravity of the house, the gentleness of the master, the vast damp rooms, the slow lugubrious pace, the order within disorder." Kinsley's column is a prime example of why liberals get such bad press. It's utter nonsense to posit that being black or being privy to the African-American experience somehow endows Freeman or Jones with voice-of-God (VOG) vocal cords. Their riveting vocal abilities are not racially based. NFL commentators have had the VOG sound, as did the late movie-trailer announcer Don LaFontaine and Robert Mitchum on the "Beef: It's What's for Dinner" TV spots. Those guys were white. Kinsley should do a bit more research before he puts his fingertips to the keyboard...

Israel and some international donors are reluctant to send funds through Hamas, which governs Gaza, for fear of "legitimizing" the Islamists, as Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert says. One Hamas spokesman told TIME that the group's primary concern was rebuilding Gaza from the rubble. "We want to rebuild houses, not our military capacity," he said. But other Hamas commanders said they would continue bringing weapons into Gaza to enable their "resistance" against Israel...
...liberal is naive, noting that he is as conservative as most other Metropolitans, and a longtime operator within the Church's tight bureaucratic machinery. He is believed to have maintained close relations with Vladimir Putin since he took over as Russian President in 2000. Both Putin, who is now Prime Minister, and current President Dmitry Medvedev, called the new Patriarch soon after the votes were tallied on Tuesday. It is widely believed that no Patriarch can emerge from the tightly controlled process of candidates? selection and voting, unless vetted by the Kremlin...
