...nothing approached Die Frau ohne Schatten. Poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal's libretto requires a primer course in the mythology of six cultures in order to be fathomed, moves murkily between the spirit world, the human world of an impoverished dyer and his sensuous wife (Baritone Walter Berry and Soprano Christa Ludwig), and the go-between world of an emperor and his wife (Tenor James King and Soprano Leonie Rysanek). The empress, alas, is without a shadow-she cannot bear children-and with the aid of a Mephistophelean nurse (Mezzo-Soprano Irene Dalis) she attempts to divest the dyer...

...nearest neighbor on the tree of life, but neither has found the neighborhood entirely respectable. For man, that hairy presence stands just too close for comfort; outside the chimp cage at the zoo, the human observer begins to wonder uneasily who is amusing whom. In this illustrated primer of primate lore by Desmond Morris, curator of mammals at the London Zoo, and his wife Ramona, the sympathy of the authors is placed solidly behind the bars...

Setting up such a trust may cost more than probate in lawyers' fees, trustees' fees and stock-transfer taxes. Even so, in many cases the trust can save...

...strategy bears more than a passing resemblance to Mao Tse-tung's guerrilla primer, which is natural, since the game was invented by the Chinese.* As subsequently developed by the Japanese, Go is surrounded by an elaborate code of courtesy. "Sit up straight-do not lounge over the board," goes one stern directive. "Do not blow smoke in your opponent's face," goes another. Players must politely warn opponents of impending capture by saying "Atari," to which the frequent reply is "Komatta na!"-meaning "Oh, what a mess...
