...copies. With the benefit of massive promotion, the paperback hit big, so perhaps the film makers thought they had a good thing. To make it better, they cast Jeannie Berlin (the scorned wife in The Heartbreak Kid") as the eponymous heroine. Sheila is fresh out of college, a Jewish princess from Harrisburg, Pa., who gets her heart broken in the big city. She falls hard for a doctor (mother will be pleased) who treats her casually (mother will be irked) and brushes her aside (mother will be furious). The doctor (Roy Scheider) takes up with Sheila's slovenly roommate...
...terror and discontent. During Big Daddy's four-year reign, at least 50,000 Ugandans-and perhaps four or five times that number-have been murdered. Amin's own brother-in-law, Wanume Kibedi, quit as Foreign Minister last year in disgust. Kibedi's glamorous replacement, Princess Elizabeth Bagaya, a former high-fashion model, was sacked two months ago on the trumped-up charge that she had made love to a white man in a rest room at Paris' Orly Airport. Mussorgsky used the harp only once -for the lush, quite beautiful scene between the Pretender Dimitri and the Polish princess Marina in Act II. It is a precise effect completely destroyed by Rimsky's use of the harp throughout the opera...
Basso Profundo. Save for Tenor Harry Theyard's dry-sounding, unathletic Pretender, the cast is just right. Mignon Dunn as Princess Marina is cunningly believable as an ambitious conspirator. Paul Plishka's Pimen is delivered with a basso profundo of enough tensile magnificence to signal a potential Boris. Right now, though, the role is the hot property of Finland's Martti Talvela, a huge (6 ft. 7 in., 260 Ibs.), nimble, running tackle of a man with an obsessed, Orson Wellesian face. At 39 he has a voice that may lack the steely edge of, say, Chaliapin...
