...campus over 200 weekdays per academic year. The result? 320,000 hours spent reading The Crimson per year. If all that reading were done on computers, it would result in the equivalent reduction of 1.23 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. But simply making the paper necessary to print one copy of The Crimson for every room on campus results in the production of 2116 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Even the use of 100 percent recycled newsprint only shaves the figure down to 1,042 metric tons, still nearly a thousand-fold difference. And those figures...
...Amity Printing, a joint venture between the Amity Foundation, a Chinese Christian charity, and the United Bible Societies, a Reading, England-based group dedicated to providing access to Christian scripture, is acting entirely within the law. Its chief customer is the China Christian Council, the supervisory body for the country's state-controlled Protestant churches. "You can build on trust or it can be broken, depending on how you act," says Peter Dean, a New Zealander and the resident consultant for the United Bible Society at Amity's Nanjing plant. It makes me laugh thinking about how much outrage they can conjure, about how quickly their thoughts are turned to print and posts. Much too quickly. Me, I'm trying to type as fast as I can. The mind is willing, but the fingers just won't fly like they used to. That's why I'm able to cut the Rocket a little slack, just like Senator Mitchell suggested...
...however, that beer, wine, and liquor compose the bulk of expenses for UC-funded parties was startling. It makes me glad as a parent of a Harvard sophomore that the College sought to cut off the booze spigot from term-bill funding. But why expend so many inches in print to criticize the UC for being weak-kneed simply to be able to continue to spend funds from term bills lavishly on beer, wine, and liquor? Surely there are more important issues to address. It makes me wonder whether there is too much imbibing at Crimson staff meetings. GARY MITCHELL...
