Founding. On Aug. 5, 1737, the first edition of the weekly Gazette "containing the freshest advices, both Foreign and Domestick," was printed by William Parkes whose daughter Eleanor later became the mother-in-law of Statesman Patrick Henry. Mr. Parkes described himself as a "Printer, by whom subscriptions are taken . . . at 15 shillings per Ann. And Book Binding is done reasonably, in the best manner." Sudden arrest, a fine of 1,000 rupees and a jail sentence of three months was the punishment, last week, of an Indian publisher and an Indian printer who dared to put forth at Calcutta last year a chunky, controversial book by a snowy-haired, upstanding Poughkeepsie clergyman.
