According to Christian moral theology, the self-awareness of sin and guilt is a necessary prologue to sanctity; in the prism of psychoanalysis, self-discovery is seen as the first step toward sanity. Individuals are not identical with nations, but sometimes they are analogous. And thus it can be argued that only the nation that has faced up to its own failings and acknowledged its capacities for evil and ill-doing has any real claim to greatness...

...COLD in Great Barrington. The sun, as if shining through a prism of ice cast a brittle, pale yellow light on the oval field where the crowd had gathered, and the chill, biting wind that whistled through the trees encircling the lot seemed to bode ill. But the expected trouble-an attempt to disrupt the dedication ceremonies-did not come and was soon forgotten as the crowd took stock of itself and the ceremonies...

...fiction of the late Flannery O'Connor is distinguished by an uncommon and otherworldly density. The inhabitants of her Southern creative country are grotesques who are viewed as through a Catholic prism darkly. Larger than life, her creations are yet pervaded by an air of death; their clear and dramatic actions nevertheless seem metaphysically resonant, touched by overtones of primitive brooding. Tiny Gyroscopes. The key part of the "Dynalens" system is an adjustable prism that is placed in front of the lens. It consists of two circular glass disks, one at each end of a short cylinder formed by a flexible bellows. The inside of the cylinder is filled with a clear liquid, usually alcohol. By tilting one or both of the glass plates, the cylinder can be made wedge-shaped, like a prism. Light beams entering the glass plate at one end of the prism are thus bent and emerge from the other plate at a different angle...

When an optical instrument is shaken or moved, two tiny gyroscopes in the Dynalens collar sense the motion and send signals that control miniature electric motors connected to the glass plates at each end of the prism. The motors, which respond almost instantaneously to movements of the optical instrument, tilt the plates to change the shape of the prism, thus bending the incoming light beams just enough to compensate for the motion. The result is a clear and remarkably steady image...
