Attorney General Janet Reno wants states tomake sex offenders register their addresseswith police for at least a decade after they are released from prison. Reno today proposed minimum standards for state notification laws under a provision of the 1994 federal crime law that will cut off 10 percent of federal anti-crime grants to states that do not meet the standards. Forty states already have established sex offender notification laws. But the statutes vary widely and judges have struck down all or part of the laws in seven states.
