Kenneth Katz makes several good points in his editorial "The Draft Is Only Fair" (February 25). He correctly notes that many antiwar, and some pro-war, students are more concerned about their own lives than about anything else. His desire for universal conscription is also commendable, though I don't completely agree with him on the reasons for implementing it. But the editorial is fraught with misconceptions and factual errors, and these popular myths need to be dispelled...

...current presence in the Gulf is not unjustified -- there seems to be a legitimate U.S. national interest in the Middle East. But Bush's strategy -- casting a shadow of the true U.S. interest in the region and rallying pro-war fervor our of a jingoistic moral obligation to peace and democracy -- is not the way we should conduct foreign policy. Such a mentality would lead to a dangerously interventionist United States. That's not in anyone's interest -- not the world...

...signees' accusations that The Crimson's policy reflects a "pro-war bias" are simply unfair. This policy cuts across the political spectrum. We would not list the 700 signees of the Students United for Desert Storm petition on the opinion page, either. That would be a boring waste of precious space. And if there's anything an opinion page shouldn't be, it's boring...

...least, the letter in question offered an opportunity of this kind. It was in no way a "petition," as I understand one editor implied. I fear that The Crimson's rejection of the letter reflects not an objectively formulated, consistently applied editorial policy, but rather its own pro-war bias. None of this, of course, excuses the hypocrisy that exists on the other side of the fence. Pro-war students at Harvard, it seems, are willing to stand firmly behind Desert Storm--so long as they do not have to leave precious Cambridge to do it. Perhaps some of them will be PAX's best customers at draft counseling sessions if conscription returns...
