...struggle for the chip market took a new turn last week when the Department of Justice announced that it was investigating six Japanese firms for possibly conspiring to limit their exports to the U.S. and prop up chip prices. The probe came as a surprise because only last year the Japanese had been cutting prices to boost exports. Many Tokyo officials saw the investigation as Washington's attempt to retaliate against their success in the semiconductor confrontation...
Mitsui employees themselves set off the criminal probe in March 1980, when they brought some suspicious looking documents to customs agents in San Francisco. Investigators searched company offices in New York City and San Francisco in December 1980, and ultimately combed through stacks of records and import statements dating from 1977 to last June. The hunt turned up evidence that Mitsui had conspired with two Northern California steel buyers to overstate the price of wire products and nails. Both U.S. firms last year pleaded guilty to criminal charges brought in separate cases...
Lieut. Richard Sandberg, 45, was put in charge of the probe, and with Chandler staked out a South Side tavern called the count, the cops cut deals on Wednesday nights. Sandberg insisted on getting tape recordings of the transactions...

Furino flunked a lie-detector test on April 27, when he claimed that he had never collected any payoffs from Donovan. He later made two appearances before the grand jury investigating Donovan. On June 2 Silverman subpoenaed John DiGilio, Furino's superior in the Genovese family, to appear before the grand jury as well. The next day Furino vanished. Silverman's report...
With rumors swirling on Capitol Hill about the identity of the Congressmen under investigation, O'Neill and Stokes announced that the House Ethics Committee would conduct its own probe. If ever an investigation needed a quick and fair resolution, it is this one. The public already holds Congress in relatively low esteem, and generalized accusations of sexual misconduct can only make matters worse. Said Baker: "I never thought I'd see the day when I'd rather talk about abortion and gun control...
