Unlike earlier bodies that have looked into the question, the Senate committee has subpoena power, and witnesses who appear before it must testify under oath. For those reasons, its probe stands a better chance than previous investigations of unearthing enough evidence to determine whether the search for missing Americans should be continued. Moreover, the replacement of the Soviet Union by a new Commonwealth of Independent States seeking good relations with the U.S. could permit American investigators to learn at last what Moscow knows about the MIAs...

SCANNING TUNNELING MICROSCOPES. Invented only 10 years ago, these extraordinary instruments probe surfaces with a metallic tip only a few atoms wide. At very short distances, electrons can traverse the gap between the tip and the surface, a phenomenon known as tunneling. This generates a tiny current that can be used to move atoms and molecules around with pinpoint precision. Thus last year physicists from IBM's Almaden Research Center manipulated 35 xenon atoms on a nickel surface to spell out their company's logo. They have also fashioned seven atoms into a minuscule beaker in which they can observe...

...possess an atomically small tip that resembles a phonograph needle. An AFM reads a surface by touching it, tracing the outlines of individual atoms in much the same way a blind person reads Braille. Because the electromagnetic force applied by the tip is so small, an AFM can delicately probe a wide range of surfaces, including the membranes of living cells. Even more astounding, by applying slightly more pressure, scientists can use an AFM tip as a dissecting tool that lets them scrape off the top of cells without destroying their interior structures. Scientists have used an AFM to detail...

...down the pending indictments of individuals connected to the bank. The investigation has speeded up now that cooperation has improved between federal officials, led by U.S. Attorney General William Barr, and state prosecutors in New York, led by Manhattan district attorney Robert Morgenthau. For months Morgenthau's unprecedented worldwide probe had been running rings around the foot-dragging Justice investigation. Plenty remains to be uncovered. A grand jury in Manhattan is looking into the roles played in B.C.C.I.'s schemes by First American's ex- chairman, former Defense Secretary Clark Clifford, and his law partner, Robert Altman...

...investigators probe the wreckage of the Robert Maxwell empire, the mess just gets uglier. British investigators believe that the late media mogul looted some $1.5 billion from the pension funds and coffers of public companies under his control, about twice the original estimate. Auditors also found that debts owed by Maxwell's private companies exceed $3.3 billion, up $830 million from earlier estimates, and that Maxwell allegedly schemed to bolster the stock price of one of his companies by illegally paying investors to buy shares...
